102-year-olds have fun in Southend

Date:  8 August 2007

Southend and Westcliff Community Centre members enjoy its annual tea party.

Hetty Palester and Julie Harris, both aged 102, were among those present when Jewish Care’s Southend and Westcliff Community Centre in Cobham Road held its annual tea party. Centre members enjoyed an afternoon of live entertainment, dancing and a cream tea, generously funded by “The Sunday Nighters” – a group of people who have now moved away from the area but continue to support local projects.

Activities organiser Alison Donn masterminded the fun and together with staff and volunteers, decorated the centre with union jack flags and place mats – made in the art room. Continuing the theme, staff dressed up in red, white and blue, ready to enjoy the sounds of a five-piece band which played a mixture of jazz and big band music.

Commenting on the afternoon, Alison Donn said: “It went very well. There was a good atmosphere and everyone had a nice time.”

Meanwhile, Jessie Jacobs, a resident of Jewish Care’s Raymond House care home in Clifton Terrace, was looking forward to her 102nd birthday party the following week.
