Around 25 children aged between five and ten brushed up their football skills during a week-long competitive Soccercamp held at Jewish Care’s Sinclair House Community Centre in Woodford Bridge Road, Ilford.
The head coach, Dan Seymour of Kickstart Soccer Services in Barkingside, said: “Each morning I’ve been teaching them different skills and techniques – anything from basic to advanced dribbling and turning to passing, shooting and creativity. Then in the afternoons, they’ve been practising penalty shoot-outs. They made a real go of it – they all enjoyed themselves and have got something positive out of it. “
The scheme was a hit with the young participants who were also taken on a trip to Tottenham Hotspur football club. Eight-year-old Arsenal fan Joe Heller from Woodford Green, said: “This was my first time at Soccercamp and I enjoyed playing football with my friends. I’ve learnt how to aim and all the skills you need.”
Spurs fan, Elliott Lakin, 9, from Loughton, added: “I’ve learnt how to turn with the ball and play in a friendly way, but what I enjoyed most were the final matches.”
When asked if there were any budding David Beckhams or Michael Owens? Mr Seymour replied: “There are quite a few promising players, which doesn’t surprise me. It shows the benefit of the centre’s development football programme.”
