Kay Court residents get partying for Chanukah

Date:  10 December 2007

Volunteers celebrate Chanukah with resdients at Kay Court

Residents received chanukah presents from Jewish Care during a party at Kay Court care home in Finchley Road, Hampstead on Wednesday (5th December). The gifts were distributed by volunteers, who also served tea and doughnuts. The Jewish Care-run home is holding another party on Monday when children from Brondesbury Park Synagogue will join them.

Chanukah, the Jewish festival of light, began on Tuesday night (4th December) and lasts for eight days. The festival is celebrated by lighting a candelabra, known as a menorah or chanukiah. Traditions include eating doughnuts and oily food such as potato cakes called ‘latkes’.

Each night, the menorah is lit, remembering the re-dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem, when the sacred Menorah in the sanctuary was re-lit with oil from the miraculous jug. According to the rabbis, this jug contained enough oil to last for one day but the miracle was that it lasted for eight days. Children are given small presents or money known as Chanukah 'gelt' on each night; another custom is playing with a spinning-top called a 'dreidel'.
