Community consulted about Golders Green site plans

Date:  4 July 2007

Jewish Care to consult community on redevelopment of 221 Golders Green Road with public exhibition.

Jewish Care, the largest health and social care charity for the UK’s Jewish community, is set to consult with the local community on their proposals for the multi-million pounds redevelopment of their headquarters at 221 Golders Green Road, the adjoining Michael Sobell Community Centre on Limes Avenue and vacant land along Beverley Gardens.

Plans for the proposed multi-purpose care campus, which was announced just over a year ago, have been developed and will include a new state-of-the-art 54 bed nursing and dementia care home, 45 ‘extra-care’ supported living apartments, a small day centre for older people and new offices for Jewish Care.

Before submitting their planning application to the London Borough of Barnet, Jewish Care is keen to consult with the local community to ensure that they can view the proposals and ask questions of the project team.

The public exhibition will be held at the Michael Sobell Community Centre on Thursday 12th July at 11am - 1pm and 4pm - 8pm and again on Sunday 15th July between 11am and 2pm. A ladies’ only session will be held between 1pm and 2pm on the 12th July, with a men only session at 3pm-4pm on the same day.

Simon Morris, chief executive of Jewish Care, said: “In order to meet the changing care needs and expectations of the community, it is vital that we redevelop our most important site, which ideally located in the heart of the community. This new campus of care will help to ensure that Jewish Care is developing services at the cutting edge of the social and health care world and will meet the needs of the next generation of older people in NW London.”

He added: “We have been working closely with Barnet Council and a team of talented young architects to ensure that we create a fantastic new building complex that offers modern care facilities to meet the community’s ever increasing needs and is of the highest architectural quality. I believe that once complete this will be one of the most exciting care developments in London, if not the UK. The public exhibition will provide an opportunity for the local community to see the proposals and to ask any questions they might have.”

It is expected that a planning application will be submitted in August 2007 and, subject to planning approval, it is intended that the scheme is complete by 2011.

Architects for the scheme are Levitt Bernstein and the planning consultants are Savills Hepher Dixon.
