Pre-Shavuot Celebration Sponsered By Clifford Chance & Canary Wharf Group

Date:  18 May 2007

People of all ages enjoy pre-Shavuot celebration thanks to Clifford Chance and Canary Wharf Group

Members of Jewish Care’s Stepney Jewish Community Centre and Dennis Centre were guests at a pre-Shavuot party in May. The event, which was sponsored by Clifford Chance LLP and Canary Wharf Group plc, was held on the 30th floor of the top law firm’s Upper Bank Street offices.

Guests at the sandwich and cheesecake lunch also included members of Nightingale (the south London care home), the East London Orthodox Synagogues Association and employees from firms based in the area.

Adrian Cohen, a partner at Clifford Chance, said: “We like to contribute something to the local community. It is very important that people working here in Canary Wharf also see themselves as part of the wider community and put something back to local residents.

“This is the fourth year we have held the event and people always appreciate it. I think it is a great opportunity for people from different generations to mix.”

Danny Seliger of Canary Wharf Group said: “Today, the elderly people here are on the 30th floor of a state-of-the-art building in East London. They grew up here, so for them to see that they haven’t been forgotten is something special.”

Stepney Jewish Community Centre member Rose Grayman said: “It is always lovely here. I love the height [of the building] – I lived on the 16th floor in Jamaica Street. I saw them building Canary Wharf, so I feel at home here!”

Describing the party as “absolutely wonderful”, another member, Gloria Carter said: “I enjoy the atmosphere. It is lovely what they do for the Jewish people.”

After lunch, Jonathan Joy of Clifford Chance gave a short talk on the theme of Shavuot and the importance of valuing different generations.
