A Supper Club which meets at the Michael Sobell Community Centre in Golders Green has recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. It was founded by Jewish Care volunteer Shirley Richman who continues to run the club together with staff members and volunteers.
Shirley Richman said: “Things have really changed since the club started but it is still very popular – we have a mixture of younger people with mental health needs and older people. The club is good for socialising, it’s great fun and everyone loves coming along.”
When asked what she liked about volunteering, Mrs Richman replied: “I just enjoy doing it. I like the people – it is something that I couldn’t do without.” She was fulsome in her praise of the helpers, administrator Beverley Barrell, whose idea the party had been, and the volunteers who arrange the weekly musical entertainment – “they are all very, very good.”
She was given a certificate marking her 25 years of volunteering, presented by Neil Taylor, Jewish Care’s director of community services and Belinda Topliff, who oversees the initiative. She also received presents for her 80th birthday from club members.
Mrs Topliff acknowledged “the precious gift of time” that Shirley has given to Jewish Care and read a tribute from Jewish Care’s chief executive Simon Morris, who was unable to attend. “The Supper Club typifies everything that makes Jewish Care so special and unique. It is a tremendous achievement and my congratulations and thanks go to everyone involved.”
