Residents of Jewish Care's Rosetrees care home in Colney Hatch Lane, Friern Barnet got stuck into a honey cake-making session prior to Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, which starts on Wednesday night. Customs include eating sweet things including dipping apples into honey and blowing the shofar (ram's horn).
Activities organiser Pauline Drayton, who led the session: said: "Everyone really enjoyed it and they were all talking about different recipes for making honey cake - we're all looking forward to the new year." Fay Cooperman described the mixing session as "very, very good," while her friend, Doris Robins joked "There are too many cooks [here] - but it's fun!"
The festival also will be celebrated at Jewish Care homes in the Borough of Barnet - these include Lady Sarah Cohen House, next door to Rosetrees; Rubens House in Ballards Lane, Finchley, and Clore Manor in Hendon. Synagogue services will be held, the shofar will be blown and special food will be served."
