Residents of Jewish Care’s Princess Alexandra Home celebrated International Women’s Day with a series of workshops on health, beauty, diet and fashion. The programme was organised by Monica George, social care coordinator at the home in Common Road, Stanmore.
Celebrated on 8 March, International Women’s Day is a global day connecting all women around the world and inspiring them to achieve their full potential. It has been observed since the early 1900s.
Volunteers Stella Fifer and Queenie Beer gave manicures to the residents and Julie Charteris, the home’s hairdresser, demonstrated different hair styles. There was talk on skin care and a make-up demonstration by care worker Daksha Shah and Monica George spoke on nutrition. The day included a talk on Women and Judaism by Joseph Roth, whose wife Mavis is a resident, and ended with a strawberry tea with entertainment by accordionist Jenny Kossew.
“I thought it was a lovely idea for the residents – it all went very well,” said Monica George.
The event took place on Tuesday 11 March as International Women’s Day fell on a Saturday, which is a day of rest for Jewish people.
