New sight loss group launched

New Jewish Care support group for people with sight loss

The first meeting of a support group for Jewish people who are blind or sight impaired will take place on 25th June in Hampstead, where it will meet on the last Wednesday of each month, from 1.30pm to 3pm.

David Brodtman, Jewish Care’s disability services development manager, said “We have been approached by a number of people coming to terms with sight loss, who would like to talk about their experiences with other people in a similar situation, to share ideas as well as gaining friendship and support.

“People will be able to discuss the best ways of accessing information, what services are on offer such as talking news and books, or everyday issues such as transport. It is about responding to people’s needs and helping them adapt to their situation, while maintaining independence and confidence.”

According to the RNIB, around two million people in the UK have a sight problem; common causes include conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy although some people are affected from birth or experience problems as a result of an accident.

Initially the group will be led by Mr Brodtman and a care worker but the charity is looking for a volunteer who can facilitate the group and coordinate the programme according to the wishes of group members.
